BACKGROUND
The network switches to purchase will replace existing systems at several city facilities, such as Fire Stations, Parking, Airport, Public Works, Solid Waste, Transit Center, and Parks' Recreational Centers. Current network switches have reached their end-of-life, close to their end of support, and are in their final development of software updates by the manufacturer. The switches have better processing power and throughput to support the growing traffic load to access IT services.

Network switches create the physical infrastructure for carrying voice, video, and data traffic from remote offices to the main data center, where city staff access IST services, including email, Internet, shared folders, voice services, and video surveillance servers.

This purchase creates a baseline to establish a life cycle for network systems to keep up with technology improvements, upgrades, and security applications developed by the industry. The projected life cycle is five to seven years, which allows setting a timeline for critical replacements and technology upgrades in phases while facilitating better budget planning.

Work to replace and upgrade network switches will be performed in-house by the IST department staff during scheduled maintenance windows.
