BACKGROUND

The City of Laredo develops and adopts a State Legislative Agenda for every legislative session. This is led by city staff with collaboration from other local community members. As a way to strengthen that relationship at the State Level where we can have greater impact, we are proposing a committee structure to work alongside city staff to develop the State Legislative Agenda for the 90th Legislative Session. If this model works, it can be more broadly adopted at a later time. The structure of this committee would be similar to the 2025 Bond Referendum Committee or Charter Review Committees.

Cities such as Georgetown, Texas have found success in this model as it gives the community a stronger ownership and understanding of its legislative needs and also gives the City a unique strength by advocating that its legislative agenda is primarily community driven, not by city officials only.

The Committee will be comprised of 9 members, one per Council District and the Mayor.
