The grant period for FY2026 Operation Slowdown will begin July 15, 2026 through August 05, 2026. This grant is to pay overtime salaries and fringe benefits for officers to conduct intense speed limit enforcement in efforts to decrease traffic fatalities involving speed. The city will be responsible for a required match of approximately $9,300.00, from General Fund. Funding is available in the Special Police Fund.

BACKGROUND

The Texas Department of Transportation has made a grant entitled Operation Slowdown available to the Laredo Police Department. These grant funds will intensify enforcement through overtime that places primary emphasis on speed limits during the annual “Be Safe. Drive a Safe Speed” Campaign. The objective of this collaborative project is to remind motorists that speeding increases the risk of death and serious injury in a collision in efforts to decrease fatalities involving speed.
