BACKGROUND
On November 5, 2024, the voters of the City of Laredo approved a Charter Amendment requiring the City to have two full-time municipal judges, where previously there was only one. In accordance with Texas Government Code Section 29.011, which states that the governing body of the municipality shall fill a vacancy in the office of municipal judge by appointment for the remainder of the unexpired term, and Texas Elections Code Section 201.027, which states that a vacancy occurs on the effective date of the Act or order creating the office, the City Council must take action to fill this new judicial position.
