BACKGROUND
A manhole of the 54” sanitary sewer collector collapsed on December 18, 2024. City-owned diesel pumps were on-site, preventing a major spill. The collapse occurred because the ground support for the manhole, composed of river silt, failed. The manhole, installed in 2001, eventually shifted, causing a crack in the wall. As water entered, the surrounding ground was washed out, leading to the failure. An engineering firm is being contracted to redesign the manhole foundation and assess the rest of the manholes along the line. Larger pumps are required to handle the high peak flows on this line.
