Summary of alignment: This grant award directly supports the execution of tuberculosis prevention and control measures in Laredo, aligning strongly with Policy 7.2.5 in the Health Element of the Viva Laredo Comprehensive Plan. The resolution authorizes funding for active case management, surveillance, directly observed therapy, and binational coordination-core activities identified in the plan for mitigating communicable diseases. Additionally, the proposal reinforces the plan’s emphasis on binational coordination and mapping disease clusters for border-region public health preparedness. ​

BACKGROUND

The City of Laredo Public Health Department continues to contract with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to provide public health services to the residents of Laredo. The Tuberculosis Federal and Bi-National Programs provides services for tuberculosis prevention and control consistent with the policies of the American Thoracic Society and Centers for Disease Control Joint Statements for tuberculosis prevention and control. These services include management of TB cases, suspects and contacts with emphasis on provision of directly observed therapy, management of patients on treatment of latent TB infection, surveillance to identify unreported individuals, infection control procedures, targeted testing of high-risk groups, professional education and training for new TB staff and continuing education for current staff, and quality assurance.
