BACKGROUND
The Federal Aviation Administration has granted the Laredo International Airport a grant to fund the extension of Runway 18R and the demolition of the Engineering Material Arresting system.
The objective of the construction of a runway extension on Runway 18R and the demolition of the expired Engineering Material Arresting System (EMAS) bed on Runway 36L will allow Runway 36L-18R to service it's commercial service airlines and cargo service. The existing EMAS satisfied the safety length requirement for the current aircraft fleet mix, however with the EMAS reaching the end of its life and in poor condition, the airport will have to take it out of service and implementation of temporary declared distances on Runway 18R.
Anticipated benefits include:
1) Improve airfield safety and operational efficiency by eliminating Foreign Object Debris (FOD) generated by the deteriorating EMAS.
2) Maintain compliance with runway length requirements for the existing aircraft fleet mix through a 471-foot extension of Runway 18R.
3) Compensate for the removal of the EMAS by providing the necessary runway safety length, supporting continued safe and reliable aircraft operations.
4) Reduce maintenance concerns and operational disruptions associated with the deteriorated EMAS while enhancing.
