PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION

Bridge Closure Policy Resolution 2025-R-224 approved by City Council on October 6, 2025.

BACKGROUND

“Two nations unite as one at the International Bridge Ceremony.” The Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association respectfully requests your valuable support to allow, if possible-and as was graciously granted during the 2025 edition of this event-the temporary suspension of vehicular traffic on International Bridge II, “Juárez-Lincoln,” in both northbound and southbound directions for a period of four (4) hours.

These moment captures the true spirit of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration like the International Bridge Ceremony, a powerful symbol of friendship and cooperation between the United States and Mexico. Held annually at the Juárez-Lincoln International Bridge, this cherished tradition represents the enduring bond between Laredo, Texas, and its sister city, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.

The highlight of the event is the “Abrazo Ceremony,” the symbolic exchange of hugs between the Abrazo Children, who represent the youth of both nations. Dressed in traditional attire, the children meet at the international boundary to embrace-reminding all in attendance that the bridge connecting Laredo and Nuevo Laredo is more than steel and stone; it is a bridge of friendship, family, and shared destiny.
